Friends and family,
As many of you know, I hope to paddle, fish and camp from Virginia to Key
West – and perhaps beyond – over a period of many years. I started this journey
last year on the Potomac with a modest four-day trip from Alexandria, Virginia
to a take-out in Stafford County. It was good that I started with a short
trip because on Day 2, I learned that I did not have a boat that was up to the
job. But I survived, learned a lot of other lessons, got a different
boat, and am preparing to start the second leg of the journey.
This year, my trip will start on June 24 and, with luck, Chris and Hannah and Julian will meet me at the take-out on July 1. Big shout-out to them all for their encouragement and support for this adventure! I will put in in the exact spot I took out last year and hopefully paddle/pedal over 100 miles just past the mouth
of the Potomac and into the Chesapeake Bay. I attached an overview of the planned route.
I recently heard a talk by a woman who had never been in a kayak before she
decided to paddle from the source of the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
In addition to being an excellent adventure, her journey was also for a
purpose – to document water quality and plastic waste in our waterways. I
was inspired by her example and plan to document and raise awareness of plastic
waste and pollution this year too. More on that in a future email.
If you are getting this, I put you on a list of folks who will get an email
or two about the trip before I go and periodic updates during the trip.
If you prefer not to get those (or if you want me to send them to a
different email address), just let me know!
Tim Torma
P.S. I need
to name my kayak. Please send me your suggestions!
