Final Safety Preparations

Among the many safety preparations for a solo kayak journey, one big one was still on my list until this past Sunday: I needed to attempt something known in kayaking circles as “deep water re entry” and in English as “getting back in your boat if you tip over.”

So, in addition to a lot of other wonderful Father’s Day activities, Chris and the kids helped me load up the boat and all of my gear and take it to the Blincoe family pool to practice this important skill.

I was pretty sure I could get back into the boat without much trouble, but less certain about how hard it would be to right a fully loaded 16 foot kayak from the water.  Flipping the loaded boat back upright and getting in from the water were both a snap.  You will see that I was lucky to have two enthusiastic helpers!
