2018 - June 21 - Day 6 - back to Old Point Comfort Marina

After I set off this morning I realized I had left my VHF radio on all night and it was dead. I paddled back into the Old Point Comfort Marina to charge it up. This stretch of water is the kind of place where you want your VHF working!
It also worked out fine because the tide changes shortly and should be more favorable for me to get into the Elizabeth River.

2018 - June 21 - Day 6 - Happy Summer Solstice, and day 6 plan

Today is the longest day of the year! I wish you all a happy Summer Solstice!
You can always see my real-time location at:

Plan for Day 6:
Today I plan to cross Hampton Roads roughly where the HR Bridge and Tunnel are, then past some serious US Navy facilities and on to the house of a friend from college. This will be another short paddling day, about 10.5 Miles again.
Richard, a really nice guy in the campground helped me secure my boat last night using cinder blocks. We got to talking and he said he had learned to sail in this area when he was younger. I asked where and he said “Dandy Haven Marina”. Seriously? We hit it off and he gave me a tour of Fort Monroe by car. A lot of history here.

Securing the boat.

There was a full rainbow after the thunderstorm last night.

Night 5 campground..

2018 - June 20 - Day 5 - a stop at Old Point Comfort Marina

So I rounded Old Point Comfort and there right before me in all its glory was the Old Point Comfort Marina.
Not my final destination but there was a restaurant on the second floor and an easy place to park the Fishhugger. I only have about a mile to go to the campground. I ain’t had no lunch. I see people up there drinking cold beers. I’m doing this!
BTW, I ordered tuna sashimi and fish tacos. Kayak touring is hard!

Look carefully— the Fishhugger is in the background.

See how I suffer?

This morning as I left Dandy Haven Marina, Bill from the yacht next door took some pictures and a video as I left and then sent them to me...

2018 - June 20 - Day 5 - Plan

Day 5, Plan for the day:
I’m leaving Dandy Haven marina and headed for the campground at Fort Monroe. It’s a short paddling day, 10.5 miles or so. I plan to try a Back River shortcut that will get me halfway there. Should be fun!
Will miss the friendly dog from the marina even though he grabbed my Clif bar when I wasn’t looking this morning.
